Disney's Fallen Princesses

I love the concept behind artist Dina Goldstein's photography project. It places Disney's princesses in real, modern day scenarios. The happy fairytale endings are sad but realistic outcomes that address current issues affecting women today, alcoholism, fast food culture, self image problems, illnesses, to name a few. Goldstein was inspired by her three year old daughter and her fascination with princesses and desire to dress like them.

These photographs interest me because they express the reality of our culture and society today. Conveying a sinister message by using a character that we associate with happy childhood memories, presenting a shocking contrast. I think this work also illustrates the naivety of children and the reality of growing older. Below are a few of my favorite images from the series, which are due to go on exhibition on the 15th October.

  1. This is some pretty interesting work, I think your right it really does depict the society that we're in today. Are children lead to grow up following false pretenses?
The images address some real social issues, but I think they are slightly disturbing but effective at the same time.

  2. the photos are very thought provoking and intelligent, but i just hope that no children ever see them, it is part of being a child to have the nieve perception of the world and your life having a happy ever after, and even at our age its good to have the positive attitude of that happy ever after feeling, if we dont then the world will never get better because we all sink down into an depressed state of reality.

  3. The second picture reminds me of work by the artist Orlan. She uses plastic surgery to explore and highlight our obsession with body ideals and perceptions of perfection. She literally uses the operating as her theatre to put on shows and seminars whilst she is being operated on. She started by going under the knife to explore the epitomy of beauty and then went under again to purposefully disfigure herself in contrast. Chilling stuff!
